Animal Adaptations Project
Introduction
The year is 2062 and you have survived an asteroid collision that killed off 90% of the animal population here on Earth. Since the collision, you have noticed that new organisms have started to appear that look very similar to past organisms. You are in charge of a research team that has been asked to help name and classify these new organisms. You have access to an extensive bank of information and data on the organisms that once existed on Earth which will help you to identify the past organisms that created the new organisms.
Task
Having access to an extensive bank of information and data on the various animals that once existed on Earth, you are tasked with determining what two past organisms combined to create the new organisms that have started to appear since the asteroid collision. You need to provide the new organism’s name (common and scientific), research the two animals it derived from, describe the new organism’s traits, describe the organism’s new biome and give three unique adaptations that have helped this new organism survive in the biome created after the asteroid collision.
Process
Work with a partner, or by yourself, to:
1. Use the website links and readings to answer the questions on Biological Classification.
2. Identify and Describe the biome that both of the past organisms existed in.
3. Research each of the past two organisms that combined to create the new organism you will identify.
3. Create the new organism, combined from the two past organisms:
4. Create a Prezi Presentation or Google slide to present your research on the past organisms and your new organism.
5. Present you research and information to the class.
1. Use the website links and readings to answer the questions on Biological Classification.
2. Identify and Describe the biome that both of the past organisms existed in.
- Picture of the biome
- Describe its climate (temperature and precipitation)
- Identify some vegetation occurring in this biome
- Identify some organisms also existing in this biome
3. Research each of the past two organisms that combined to create the new organism you will identify.
- Give the common and scientific names (Genus, species) for each of the past two organisms from which your new organism derived from
- Provide pictures of each of the original organisms.
- Identify its biological classification (Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species)
- Research the diet of each original organism.
- Identify its feeling level within its ecosystem (producer, consumer or decomposer)
- Incorporate it into a food chain of 4-5 organisms
- Identify the behavior and appearance.
- Nocturnal, diurnal, estivate, hibernate, and migrate, mating dances/songs, special markings, special smells/odors, webbed toes, long necks, etc.
3. Create the new organism, combined from the two past organisms:
- Give your new species a common name and a scientific name
- The common name you create should be creative and unique.
- The Genus, species should be correctly written and should also be a real Genus that matches the original past organisms with a species name that is unique and differentiates it from the past organisms.
- Provide a picture of your new organism
- Identify the diet of the new organism.
- Identify its feeling level within its ecosystem (producer, consumer or decomposer)
- Identify and describe the new biome the new organism lives in.
- Picture of the biome
- Describe its climate (temperature and precipitation)
- Identify some vegetation occurring in this biome
- Identify the organism’s behaviors and appearance.
- Nocturnal, diurnal, estivate, hibernate, and migrate, mating dances/songs, special markings, special smells/odors, webbed toes, long necks, etc.
- List and describe three unique adaptations that this new organism has evolved for its survival in its new biome/habitat.
4. Create a Prezi Presentation or Google slide to present your research on the past organisms and your new organism.
5. Present you research and information to the class.
